Weather Proof your home this Winter

Winterizing Your Home: Window and Door Caulking |

Outside your home

  • Check your gutters. Get rid of any debris that is stuck in the gutter so that ice and water can move freely without causing damage. It’s also a good idea to install gutter guards to protect your gutters.
  • Cut your trees back and remove dead branches this will prevent any damage to near-by objects. If the wind is strong enough it might cause the branches to break off.
  • Seal cracks and holes on the outside wall. Have proper weather stripping in place to stop melted snow from seeping in.

Inside your home

  • Insulate your attic and crawl spaces. Doing this will help you save massively in the long run on heating costs.
  • Make sure no drafts are coming from windows and doors. Walk around your home with a lit candle if the candle flickers then there’s a draft in that area, find it and fix it. Make sure your windows are keeping the heat and not letting the heat out. Use door stoppers if you must to trap heat in the room.
  • Have your chimney cleaned by a professional.
  • Prepare for flooding. It happens every year in Ireland and tragically causes a lot of damage to people who may have never had a previous flooding problem. Here’s what to do: Have sandbags ready to go. If it does happen at least you will be able to respond very quickly and limit the damage that it causes.
