The International Literature Festival takes place in Dublin this week, with dozens of wonderful events celebrating writers of fiction and non-fiction, poetry, children’s books and Irish language. The week long event features readings, discussions, debates, workshops, performance and screenings. The purpose of the event is to celebrate the written word and the joy of reading. Curling up with a good book is a wonderful way to relax and escape into another world. This week we show you how to create a cosy reading nook in your own home.
Find a spot for your reading nook
Firstly, you’ll need to decide on the most suitable place for your cosy reading nook. You might have to rearrange your living room or bedroom furniture. Find a corner that’s as quiet as possible, with as few distractions as possible. Ensure there’s a power point within reaching distance so that you can plug in a lamp or if you use an e-reader such as a Kindle that you need to charge.
Decide what kind of seating you want
Do you prefer a big fluffy chair, one you can curl up in or something a little more supportive? Perhaps you prefer stretching out on a nice sofa, or relaxing in a recliner armchair. Pick a seat that you are most comfortable, or consider investing in a beautiful new armchair.
Ensure you have enough light
Lighting is so important to ensure you are not straining your eyes as you read, but you should also ensure it’s not too bright so as to cause a glare on the pages of your book. If you are reading in the daytime, a spot near a window with good natural light is best. For reading in the evening or at night, a lamp will be necessary. A table lamp of floor lamp in the corner by your chair is ideal.
Make sure it’s comfortable
The best way to ensure that you can really switch off and focus on your reading is to make sure you are completely comfortable. Have lots of pillows or cushions to hand, and a cosy throw to keep you warm on a chilly evening. Use soft, neutral colours that won’t distract you. A locker or side table beside your armchair is a must-have for your favourite cup of tea, coffee or hot chocolate.
Give your books a home
Display your love of books and keep them all to hand with a beautiful bookcase beside your cosy reading nook.
Finally, allocate yourself time to enjoy your book. Turn off the TV and your phone. Some people like to listen to some gentle background music as they read. Tell your family or housemates that you don’t want to be disturbed for a little while. Enjoy some me time!
