Do you have trouble getting to sleep? Waking up for no reason in the middle of the night? Perhaps you feel like you got up on the wrong side of the bed this morning. Sleep is so incredibly important to our health and to how we function throughout the day, and not just any old sleep. It has to be good quality sleep or we can be left walking around like zombies. The average adult needs between 7 and 9 hours sleep per night in order to feel fully rested and ready for the day ahead, yet 1 in 3 adults are not getting enough shut-eye. We’ve done a LOT of research on the topic, and asked some of our team at EZ Living Furniture what their top sleep tips for getting a decent night’s rest are.
We all know the feeling – it’s time for bed but you can’t resist just checking your Facebook/Snapchat/Twitter/Email just one more time before you go to sleep. Perhaps you’ve just discovered a new series on Netflix, and maybe you could just watch a few minutes of the next episode…suddenly it’s 3am and your alarm clock is due to go off in a little under four hours. The blue light emitted by your laptop, phone and other devices acts as a stimulant to your brain, and even when you do put away the screen, you won’t necessarily fall asleep straight away. Try to refrain from using any electronic devices in bed – if you need something to help you sleep, try reading a book instead. If you absolutely have to check your phone, some smartphones also have a ‘warm light’ option in the settings for nighttime use that is not as harsh on your eyes.
Get Some Fresh Air
Outdoor activity during the day or early evening will tire you out. Avoid intense exercise up to four hours before bed, but gentle exercise such as yoga or a short walk with the dog will help you to clear your mind, as well as being better for your health.
As you try to get to sleep, your body temperature naturally starts to decrease. Having your bedroom at the right temperature can help you reach this state sooner, so ensure it’s not too warm or too cold. 16-18 degrees celsius is the optimum temperature range for your room.
Create a Ritual
If you start to do the same things each evening before you go to bed, your body will get into a routine. Have a shower, brush your teeth and read a few pages of a book before you try to get to sleep.
Walking into a neat and tidy bedroom and a bed with clean sheets will put your mind at ease, where a messy floor can put your brain into overdrive while you try to get to sleep.
Invest in a Good Mattress
This is one of the best sleep tips we can give you! Sleeping on a mattress which is old or out of shape can affect the way you sleep – an uncomfortable surface may cause you to toss and turn at night, and wake up with a crick in your neck. Don’t just buy any mattress; do some research first on the various types available, such as memory foam or pocket sprung. Try out different comfort levels to determine what feels right for you. A good mattress should last for 8-10 years, so consider it an investment.
